“Hospitality isn’t a contest, it’s sharing the best you have without apology.”
The Hospitality industry includes any organisation that provides Food, Beverages or Accommodation. Hospitality covers many different styles and quality, ranging from six star hotels and Michelin starred restaurants, to burger stalls, local tea shops, youth hostels and work canteens.
In the long summer break there are many things you could do to prepare for studying Hospitality at BTEC Level 3 - some of these are suggested below:
Get Some Practical Experience :
Try to get a job working in the industry - any practical experience you can get that involves customer service, food beverage or accommodation preparation or service, or being part of any team within an organisation that delivers Hospitality (Food Beverage or Accommodation)
Any experience or working in any of the following will give you some understanding of the industry:
- Waiter/ress,
- Catering support (preparing food/pot-washing etc.)
- Housekeeping (making up rooms)
- Working on font of House (Reception) or manning any kind of customer service desk
- Work-experience of any kind in the Marketing, Promotion, Accounts or Sales department of any organisation
- Try asking a local Hospitality business if you could shadow someone for a day as part of your preparation for studying Hospitality - most businesses are keen to help and might even offer you paid work! Placed to consider might include:
- Any chain Hotel, Restaurant or Café near your home; your local Cinema; Sports Club; Health Club; Horse or Motor Racing venues; ice-rink or swimming pool café etc. etc.
Watch Some Hospitality-related programmes :
:There is a growing number of TV programmes related to the Hospitality industry ranging from informative (Documentary style) to entertaining. Some episodes of a few of these types of programme are below but you may want to watch more episodes to help you build a picture of different aspects of the Hospitality industry. Some suggestions include:
'The Hotel Inspector', any of the 'Masterchef' programmes - 'Masterchef Australia' (above) is particularly fun - 'First Dates', 'Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares' or 'The Hotel', are all designed to entertain, but will give you a range of reality TV that explores aspects of the Hospitality industry.
